Facebook to Buy Messaging App WhatsApp for $19 Billion

Facebook to Buy Messaging App WhatsApp for $19 Billion
Facebook Inc. (FB), the world’s largest social network, agreed to purchase mobile-messaging startup WhatsApp Inc. for as much as $19 billion in cash and stock, the biggest Internet acquisition in more than a decade.
The accord includes $12 billion in stock, $4 billion in cash and $3 billion in restricted shares, Facebook said yesterday in a statement. It’s the largest Internet deal since Time Warner’s $124 billion merger with AOL in 2001, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. WhatsApp has more than 450 million members, with 1 million users being added daily.
Facebook Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg, who bought photo-sharing service Instagram for about $700 million in 2012, has been adding applications such as messaging and news to court smartphone and tablet users. WhatsApp, which would be the company’s biggest acquisition, competes with apps from Twitter (TWTR) Inc., Kik Interactive Inc. and Snapchat Inc., the photo-message startup that rebuffed a $3 billion Facebook bid last year.

Latest UPSC’s Civil Services Aspirants will get 2 More Attempts

Published on : 12-FEB-2014
Civil services aspirants can now take a sigh of relief. The Central Government on 10 February has announced 2 additional attempts permitted to the candidates of all the categories aspiring to make it in the prestigious competitive civil services examination, which is conducted by Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), GOI. The 2 additional attempts will take effect from Civil Services 2014 Examinations.
After the orders issued by Department of Personnel and Training, announcing the centre’s approval for 2 more attempts, the Civil Service Aspirants of a General category will now be able to appear for the Civil Services Examination 6 times in total, while OBC aspirants would be able to attempt the exam 9 times in total.
As per the eligibility mentioned in the notification, a candidate who has attained the age of 21 years but not attained 30 years is eligible to apply for the civil services examination.  However, the upper age limit criteria remains same and only attempts have been increased, adhering to the upper age limit prescribed for the candidate’s category.
The ST/SC was already having no cap on the number of attempting limits. However, the upper age limit to appear in the examination is relaxed for the ST/SC categories to up to a maximum of five year and for OBC aspirants the relaxation is up to a maximum of three years.  The upper age relaxation is also set for Physically Handicapped candidates, for up to a maximum of 10 years.
The centre’s decision of allowing 2 more examination attempts for all categories came after knowing about the grievances of aspirants who were moved by the "sudden" changes made in the Civil Services examination by the UPSC, in both exam syllabus as well as paper pattern for the Civil Services Mains exam 2013. Unpleasant with the change, the aspirants demanded for more time to be able to adapt themselves to the new modifications in Syllabus and other changes, effected in the civil services examination pattern from March 2013 examination.
The revised paper notified by UPSC on March 5, 2013 doubled the number of papers for General Studies and significantly increasing its weightage vis-a-vis optional subjects, months ahead of the Mains 2013 exam.
The Civil Service Examinations is conducted by the UPSC to select Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS) and Indian Foreign Service (IFS) among others. The examination is held in three stages - preliminary, mains and interview to select the eligible candidate for this job of high repute.
This year the Civil Services examination (Preliminary) is scheduled to be held on 24 August, 2014 (Tentatively).

Twitter building integrated e-commerce service: Report

Twitter is exploring ways to sell products directly from the 140-character missives the one-to-many text messaging service site is famous for, a technology news site has reported.Re/Code on Friday posted a screen shot of what this new service could look like, integrated into the site's familiar baby blue interface.
It said it found the image posted on e-commerce site Fancy.com, which appeared to be working on a partnership with Twitter.
In the screenshot, which is no longer able to be viewed, certain tweets are tagged "Twitter Commerce" and, when expanded, show a green "Buy with Fancy" button.
The purchaser would then be able to enter their payment and shipping information on another screen, all without leaving the Twitter app or site.
It was not clear what fees or commissions Twitter would charge for products sold within its social network. Nor was it clear whether Fancy.com was the only site with which Twitter was apparently considering a partnership.
Neither site responded to requests for comment from Re/Code.
Twitter has become massively popular around the world and it had a sizzling Wall Street debut in November, gaining nearly 73 percent over its first day of trading on the New York Stock Exchange.
(Also see: Twitter shines on NYSE debut, stock closes 73 percent up on opening day)
But some analysts are skeptical about its ability to boost usage and revenues to become profitable.

Facebook celebrates its 10th anniversary.

As Facebook celebrates its 10th anniversary, the world's biggest social network is finding its path as a maturing company, adapting to an aging user base. The company created in a Harvard dorm room in 2004 has established itself as a phenomenon, securing its place in the world of the technology giants.
"Facebook has made the world much smaller, much more interactive," said Global Equities Research analyst Trip Chowdhry.
"Facebook started the social revolution but it may not be able to control it."
In its short history, Facebook has become a part of daily life for more than a billion people around the globe.
Co-founder Mark Zuckerberg described the mission as "making the world more open and connected," and some say he has accomplished just that.
"More than 20 percent of all time spent on the Internet is spent on Facebook," says Lou Kerner, founder of the Social Internet Fund.
Yet in some ways, Facebook could be the victim of its own success.
Its initial core base of teens and university students has expanded, and Facebook is now widely used by people in all age groups.
Facebook says it has a global total of 1.23 billion monthly active users, including 945 million who use the social network on a mobile device. But some analysts note that Facebook has to shift strategy for an aging user base.
(Also see: Facebook crosses one billion active users mark)
An iStrategyLabs study of US Facebook users found a 25 percent drop in the number of users in the 13-17 age group, along with an 80 percent jump in the number of users over 55.
"People joke that for the teen, Facebook isn't cool when your mom is on it," Kerner said. "I think it's not even your mom any more, now it's also your grandmother."
The research firm Social Bakers says its data shows teens are a big and still-growing part of Facebook.
"The 18-24 year-old age group is still the largest," said the group's Ben Harper.
"Our data shows the growth of audience and interactions on Facebook, and while teens are undoubtedly using multiple platforms (as we all are), they are also sticking with Facebook."
In the United States, Facebook is used by 71 percent of all adults who are on the Internet, or 57 percent of the adult population, according to the Pew Research Center.
(Also see: Facebook the source of news for one-third of US adults: Study)
Pew found that while Facebook is used by 89 percent of online adults in the 18-29 age group, it is also used by 60 percent in the 50-64 age category and 45 percent of those over 65.
Facebook is maturing as a company as well. It had a calamitous initial public offering in May 2012 plagued by technical glitches, and saw its share price slump by half, but has been on a roll for the past year, with its stock hitting record highs.
Facebook has reassured its investors it can generate advertising revenue, particularly in the mobile segment used by an increasing number of members.
Facebook reported its profit for the full year 2013 jumped to $1.5 billion from just $53 million in 2012, and revenues increased to $7.87 billion from $5.1 billion.
(Also see: Facebook posts strong Q4 earnings, cites growth in mobile ad revenue)
According to the research firm eMarketer, Facebook has become the second-largest recipient of digital advertising spending behind Google, and is particularly strong in mobile ads.
"Facebook appears the best way to play the social Internet," Morgan Stanley analysts said in a note to clients, preferring Facebook to the up-and-coming network Twitter.
Some analysts point out that Facebook's appeal to grownups is a big part of maturation, and represents the key to generating revenue and profit.
"Advertisers place promotional content on Facebook for one reason only to generate sales," said analysts at the research firm Trefis.
"The vast majority of purchases made online come from users of ages 25 and above. One study suggests it is as high as 85 percent. With these figures in mind, the decline in users ages 13-24 becomes almost irrelevant."
Kerner note that being "cool" is not necessarily Facebook's long-term goal.
"You can't be the cool place forever," he told AFP.
"One of two things happen to companies when they're done being cool. They either go away, or they transition to becoming more of a utility. And Facebook is very successfully doing the latter."
